Frequently Asked Questions
What is a STAR Smog Check?
A STAR Smog Check is an inspection performed by stations that meet higher performance standards established by the Bureau of Automotive Repair. Some vehicles are specifically directed to STAR stations by the DMV for their smog certification.
How often do I need a smog check?
In California, most vehicles require a smog check every two years for registration renewal. Additionally, a smog check is required when selling a vehicle or when first registering a vehicle from out-of-state.
Which vehicles are exempt from testing?
Gas-powered vehicles from 1975 or older, electric vehicles, and motorcycles are generally exempt. Newer vehicles (8 years old or less) may pay a smog abatement fee instead of undergoing an inspection for the first few registration cycles.
What happens if my vehicle fails?
If your vehicle fails, you must have the necessary repairs performed and then undergo a re-test. You cannot renew your registration until the vehicle passes. Our team provides a diagnostic report to help pinpoint the cause of the failure.
Do I need to bring any paperwork?
It is highly recommended to bring your DMV registration renewal notice. It contains a specialized barcode that ensures your vehicle data is entered accurately and transmitted instantly to the DMV database once the test is complete.
